Garmin nuvi 2360LT Review

Getting the newest GPS devices have plenty of advantages. First, you know that you are getting the latest map data installed so the device should last you a long time even if it does not have lifetime map updates built-in. You also know that you are getting the latest enhancements whether it is improved accuracy, better interface, or brand new technologies. All of the models in the 2300 series have these traits but all of the nice extras are reserved in the 2360 models and above. The Garmin nuvi 2360LT grants lifetime traffic and some wonderful extras making this far more than a GPS device.

Design

It is quite hard to tell how feature-rich this Garmin nuvi car GPS device is because it generally looks the same as the other GPS devices. It has that familiar 4.3-inch widescreen touch display and the traditional black bezel that defines most GPS devices. It has a sunlight-readable display which ensures that the text and maps are readable.

Interface

Although the added features may drive the newer first-time users away, the Garmin nuvi 2360LT still makes use of the same interface with the same "Where To" and "View Map" icons so you can make your own routes just as easily as a very cheap Garmin nuvi device. A rather new and interesting interface feature is its dual-orientation so you can turn the device in portrait mode and have the maps be displayed vertically. You can also zoom in deeper so you can witness the terrain being rendered in 3D graphics.

While the touchscreen is handy and responsive, you can activate certain features by purely using speech commands. Try simple commands like "Find Address" and tell the device the address you wish to find the Garmin nuvi 2360LT can do just that. You can also use your voice to wake up the device and navigate through the menu if you really need to stay focused on the road.

Navigation Features

The Garmin nuvi 2360LT is fairly complete in navigation features so you can freely use the device in the US and then take it to Canada or Mexico and still find yourself surrounded with dozens of points of interests. The number of POIs exceeds 6 million so getting turn-by-turn directions is really easy. Just take note that there are no map lifetime updates which is a fair tradeoff for a reduced price.

However, you have very good control over the routes that you plan. With lifetime traffic updates, you can really come up with a good route and let the trafficTrends determine a good estimate on when you will arrive on your destination. If you are low on fuel, you can simply switch to the ecoRoute function on the home screen so the device can come up with an effective route that saves you the most fuel. Using this feature also keeps track of your fuel usage so you can really witness proof that the function is working.

When the routes move on to the highway, you can let the lane assist with junction view do its work in guiding you to the right lane well before the turn making it impossible to miss. This feature will also bring the road signs on to the screen so you are better notified.

While you travel through routes, adding points as "Favorites" can really come in handy because there is a feature called trafficTrends that analyzes these points so it can make suggestions on where to go next based on your previous routes. This can reduce the interaction of the device so you can focus more on driving especially with text-to-speech technologies calling out the street names for you.

Extra Features

The Garmin nuvi 2360LT supports connectivity to Bluetooth devices so if you have a Bluetooth phone, you can pair up the device and make hands-free calls through the GPS device's built-in microphone. You can store contacts for easy calling or call certain points that already have stored numbers. When your phone rings, you can also answer the call by touching the screen. This ensures safer driving and better communication on the road. This feature is included on top of the other extras introduced in entry-level devices like the JPEG viewer, calculator, and other utilizes.

With the absence of the lifetime maps updates and the use of a 4.3-inch display rather than the larger 5-inch display, the Garmin nuvi 2360LT comes out a bit cheap for a midrange being priced at $220. For something offered by Garmin, this is a great pick if you frequently want to rely on your GPS unit.
