Design

The nuvi 2460LMT is noticeably larger than any of the other standard widescreen devices. It measures 5 inches diagonally and features a white backlight that powers the WQVGA color display. The use of the touchscreen is easier now since the icons will appear larger than usual offering more room for touching.

Interface

While the nuvi 2460LMT isn't the first 5-inch offering by Garmin, the manufacturer went ahead and made some minor but nice changes to the interface. The home screen fortunately looks the same with the "View Map" and "Where To?" icons present so all kinds of users can get started right away. There are also smaller icons present like the "Detour" and "ecoRoute" buttons so they can be accessed quickly when needed.

Pressing the "View Map" icon loads up the map and more can be seen because of the larger display. The 3-D view looks colorful and even animated making it more fun to watch the position update. The car icon can also change to a walking person which is nice for usage outside the vehicle.

The Garmin nuvi 2460LMT features innovative speech recognition features as well and can recognize a few phrases like "Go Home" or "Find City". This feature is useful for drivers that need to keep both hands on the steering wheel. It also serves as a nice companion to the text-to-speech feature that says the directions including the street names.

Navigation Features

The Garmin nuvi 2460LMT can do more than just providing turn-by-turn directions of basic routes. Multiple routes can be planned with support for up to 100 routes. The route can be managed conveniently to create a more efficient route or the ecoRoute function can be used instead so the optimizations are done automatically. An optimized route using the ecoRoute feature makes sure that it is fuel-efficient and it does this by analyzing the vehicle acceleration data and road speed data of that particular route. It also puts traffic into mind since this Garmin nuvi unit has traffic updates. This service is provided for free and never expires so those frequently taking busy routes should consider this GPS unit.

The 2460LMT does not hold back in map features either. Covered areas basically include all of North America (US, Canada, Mexico) and there are 6 million points of interests preloaded onto the device so users can find nearby restaurants, hotels, and other key landmarks quickly. It also offers free lifetime maps updates to ensure that the maps are as accurate as possible on the same device for years to come.

The Lane Assist with Junction function continues to be a favorite amongst Garmin nuvi users which is why it is featured once again in this 5-inch model. It simply tells the driver what lane the vehicle needs to be in so the indicated exit can be taken so the driver can move on to the next route.

Extra Features

The built-in microphone is not only meant for voice commands but it is also for engaging in phone conversations. It makes this possible by using the built-in Bluetooth capabilities to connect to any nearby phone that has the Bluetooth turned on. Once a connection is established, phone calls can be initiated using the touchscreen display on the Garmin nuvi 2460LMT. Then the driver can talk to the device and listen for responses on the built-in speaker. This feature goes on top of the other extra features like the "Where am I?" function which displays vital positional information that emergency services can make use of.

$300 may sound a bit high for a GPS device but it is well-rounded with some old features that made previous generation devices successful along with refined features like the interface and ecoRoute functions. Plus the 5-inch display is a significant upgrade that 4.3-inch owners will quickly embrace.
