Garmin nuvi 2460LT Review

The naming scheme for Garmin nuvi devices can be a bit confusing because there are some models that have 3 digits while there are others having 4 digits. Some of these models also have a suffix which is important for people that need to spend a bit extra on something valuable. The Garmin nuvi 2460LT is one of those devices that may look an average Garmin device of a newer generation but the overall look of the device speaks for itself.

Design

The Garmin nuvi 2460LT makes a strong impression with its large extra-wide display that measures 5 inches diagonally. It has the same design elements as Garmin nuvi devices of the past so using the touchscreen interface is just about as easy as taking the device on the go.

Interface

Many Garmin devices have been using the same 2-icon home interface for quite some time because those features happen to be the most used which is why the "Where To" and "View Map". These icons look great on the screen and the 480 x 272 pixel resolution allows icons to be added to the sides and bottom as well. This effectively makes more features accessible without diverting attention away from the main features. The map is now worth looking at since the current position indicator animates and can be changed to a person if the device is not used for automotive purposes. Those that are not fond of interacting with their GPS device by means of touching can talk to the Garmin nuvi 2460LT instead and have it follow simple voice commands like "Find Address".

Navigation Features

The Garmin nuvi 2460LT is all about coming up with the best possible route and it must evaluate certain factors in order to get this. Fortunately a good route can be generated rather easily because of the ecoRoute feature. Not only does this feature plan a solid route to a destination but it also optimizes the route in such a way that the driver uses up less fuel. This translates to money savings and an overall better driving experience. Up to 100 routes can be stored so lengthy trips can be planned as well. Various key destinations can be sorted for better management and the electronic bread crumb trail helps monitor the progress.

The 2460LT offers a lifetime subscription of traffic updates just like other Garmin nuvi devices that have the "T" suffix. The FM traffic receiver can effectively deliver traffic updates so drivers can make detour routes without getting caught in traffic.

Although the lifetime maps update is exclusive for the nuvi 2460LMT, the 2460LT still offers a nice set of detailed maps covering the US, Canada, and Mexico areas. There are around 6 million points of interest present and they are accurately placed in most cases since the device has been released recently.

Many long routes involve a highway or two and often involve critical turns where a certain exit needs to be taken in order to stay on course. This is where the Lane Assist with Junction feature can prove to be useful where the view is switched to 3 so drivers can see what lane they need to be in so the exit can be taken. It also doubles as a visual aid that shows important signs such as speed limits.

Extra Features

The Garmin nüvi 2460LT has a built-in Bluetooth capability which means that it can pair with any phones and smartphones that also have Bluetooth. This opens up the possibility for making calls without ever touching the phone. The large touchscreen can transform to a keypad so the number can be dialed so it can send that number to the phone. The built-in microphone and speaker allows the conversation to stay between the user and the device.

It also goes beyond the navigational features to encourage users to take the 2460LT while walking. The device is still light despite the size increase and features like the measurement and currency converters may help. It is also useful to carry the device around in case of an emergency because the "Where Am I" feature can bring up important information on the position that emergency services can use. It also doubles as a quick feature to see any important POIs that are nearby like police stations and gas stations.

Conclusion

With the Bluetooth feature and lifetime traffic, the price is on the high side at around $260 but remember that this is a 5-inch device and it renders maps a lot better. Combined with the interface improvements, it is safe to say that the Garmin nüvi 2460LT beats its predecessors.
