Garmin nuvi 295W Review

Convergence is the new buzzword at Garmin. Surf the web? Take a photo? Send an email? Yes, the Garmin nuvi 295W does them all. And in case you want to know, it navigates too. It does almost everything except make a call. For that you will need to get a nuvifone.

Design

The nuvi 295W is designed to fit in your pocket. It looks and feels like a smartphone with a slim form factor and a 3.5” wide touchscreen. You can switch between landscape and portrait view on the fly. This is useful if you want to switch from in-car to on-foot navigation. It also has a 3-megapixel camera on the reverse side of the screen and a mini-headphone jack for listening to MP3s.

Features

The nuvi 295W comes with a mouth-watering set of features:

  • Wi-Fi Connectivity - surf the web, access and send e-mail, and view email attachments of Microsoft® Word, Excel®, PowerPoint®, PDF and JPG files (Note: Wi-Fi connectivity is only available in select coverage areas).
  • Google™ Local Search - search customer-rated points of interest (POIs) such as restaurants, hotels and shopping mall, etc.
  • 3MP Camera - also geotags pictures so you can create routes to them. You can also send the picture to a friend to route to or upload to the web to auto-locate on a map.
  • MP3 player with a 2.5 mm headphone/audio out jack.
  • Maps for the United States and Canada with 6 million points of interest such as stores, restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues, gas stations, ATMs, and speed limits for most major roads.
  • Text-to-Speech - get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination.
  • CityXplorer™ Maps - get the latest detailed roads and points of interest for metropolitan areas.

Other standard features include a calculator, stop watch and calendar. Also included are travel tools such as a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter and weather forecasts. With photo navigation, you can download pictures from Garmin Connect™ Photos and navigate to them. Garmin Locate™ automatically marks your position when you remove nuvi from your car so you'll never forget where you parked again. Nuvi 295W is compatible with the free Garmin Garage where you can download custom voices and vehicles.

What's lacking are some useful features found on other Garmin navigators such as lane assist, 3D reality view, real-time traffic information, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Bottom Line

The Garmin nuvi 295W is a reasonably priced piece of technology with an impressive set of useful features. With the introduction of the nuvi 295W, Garmin transformed the mundane GPS navigator into something fun. GPS navigation will never be the same again.
