Garmin zumo 665 Review

There are lots of portable devices out on the market that cost nearly $1,000. A lot of thought needs to be made since some of the larger electronics cost around that amount or sometimes fall cheaper. Before getting a device like this, see if the features is enough to replace multiple devices or remove the need to purchase other devices altogether. The Garmin zumo 665 is a portable GPS that has this price tag and can be worth the high cost if the user own a couple of cars and motorcycles.

Design

The Garmin zumo 665 does not try to make any fancy impressions on the design side and instead goes for a sleek look that looks similar to the Garmin zumo family of devices. It has a 4.3-inch widescreen display just like the affordable zumo models, but a gray finish with black bezel. It is better suited against tougher conditions since it is meant for motorcycle mounting. The waterproof, UV and fuel spray resistant case makes this a device that real travellers can bring wherever they go.

Interface

The interface of the Garmin zumo 665 is both powerful and easy for road warriors and people new to GPS devices too. There are only two main icons on the screen with the "Where To?" icon for quick and easy route planning and the "View Map" icon which brings up the local map in either 2-D or 3-D views. The screen is friendly on the gloves for touching and remains readable under direct sunlight.

Navigation

The Garmin zumo 665 unfortunately does not have all of the bells and whistles found in the high-end Garmin zumo devices, but it comes pretty close in terms of maps covering the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. There are over 6 million points of interest so drivers can find models, gas stations, restaurants, and more quite easily. It has the Lane Assist with Junction View feature that nice car GPS devices have to make it easier for people to navigate through tough junctions and intersections. It makes good use of the 3-D graphics so drivers can track their current position and find out what lane the driver needs to be in.

The performance is significantly better than cheaper zumo devices thanks to the HotFix feature. This feature makes full use of the high-sensitivity GPS receiver to predict the satellite's location for faster acquisition times.

Extras

The Garmin zumo 665 is really designed for both bikers and car drivers because it contains two mounts for the motorcycle and car. It is easy to install and can be well positioned for safe and secure driving. The text-to-speech feature voices out the navigational experience so eyes do not always need to be on the screen.

With its Bluetooth A2DP technology, the Garmin zumo 665 also acts a gateway between driver and his or her phone or mobile device. Phone calls can be made directly from the main menu once a connection is established. Some points of interest can be called directly reducing the dependence on the phone book.

The Garmin zumo 665 also doubles as a multimedia powerhouse since it has a nice touch-driver MP3 player that can read MP3 files stored in the microSD card. MicroSD cards are fairly large these days so hours worth of MP3s can be placed in the device. Pictures can be stored and viewed through the zumo interface as well. The Bluetooth A2DP technology can be used with Bluetooth helmets or headsets so both text-to-speech instructions and music can be heard clearly.

Drivers can also share their rides and trips with other Garmin zumo owners by checking out the Garmin Connect online community. No matter where the device is mounted during the trip, the trip computer view can be used as a secondary dashboard, which shows a compass along with other nice statistics like the speed and elevation. XM subscribers get an added push with real-time access to hundreds of XM radio channels. XM NavWeather and XM NavTraffic are also good add-ons that help the zumo plan even better routes.

The Garmin zumo 665costs about $1,000, but should be able to last for a very long time considering its tough durability and outstanding set of features for both motorcycle and car owners.
