TomTom kicked off 2011 with a lot of fanfare as they not only introduced some new devices but actually placed these new devices in their own new family which is the TomTom VIA series. With affordable prices under the $250 mark, these series aim to succeed the aging TomTom XL and XXL devices one day. However, TomTom isn't ready to abandon their TomTom GO devices which are for people that need some serious features for frequent travel use. With the introduction of the TomTom GO 2435TM and TomTom GO 2535TM units, TomTom has a new treat if you want all of the ultimate features wrapped in a 4.3-inch display.

Design

The design of the TomTom GO 2435TM is stunningly simple with a black bezel surrounding the 4.3-inch display. It is a bit thinner than the other GO devices which is nice because none of its powerful features are dropped as a result. The touchscreen is made of glass for smoother operation. It also opens up the ability to move to different screens by swiping your fingers or pinching your fingers to zoom the map. It does not have an integrated mount like the new VIA devices but the separate mount is magnetic so it clicks and locks into place whenever you need to place it on your windshield or dashboard.

Interface

The good thing is that the enhancements brought to the VIA models are carried over to this new high-end device. There are two big icons that you will use most often when planning routes when necessary or checking out the map and your detailed surroundings. The map offers lots of content that may keep you busy before you even start driving. It features over 60 categories containing points of interests totaling more than 7 million. You get full North America coverage so road trippers in the US and other areas can make full use of the route planning features. It has lifetime maps updates as well so you won't have to worry about buying a new device in the future just to get some updated maps. These maps remain free as soon as updates are available.

Navigation Features

TomTom GO devices are all about speed which means that it can generate routes rather quickly. The IQ Routes technology also ensures that the route it comes up with is the fastest possible route this very moment so the results can vary from different times and days. It also takes advantage of the free lifetime traffic updates so you can consistently dodge traffic no matter where you go. You can also dodge potential accidents since you can always listen to the GPS device talk to you whenever you need to make turns. Its text-to-speech function can even pronounce names rather well.

Complex intersections and junctions that have multiple lanes can be pretty difficult to navigate through even if you have a basic GPS device or smartphone. You will need a little bit of extra like TomTom's Advanced Lane Guidance feature so you can take the right lane which will eventually lead you to the right exit so you never steer away from the path. It uses detailed graphics that render key signs and it shows clear indicators so you can't miss key turn. The microphone can also be used for voice commands and it surprisingly knows a lot of English phrases like "Drive to an address".

Bluetooth isn't used very often in the car and even at home these days unless you have a Bluetooth headset. If you really do not need the sound going to your ear, you can try the built-in speakerphone that lets you listen to people that are calling you once you linked your smartphone and GPS properly through Bluetooth. This virtually eliminates all the dangers of talking on the phone while driving since you do not need to hold the phone while talking since it has a built-in mic as well.

The TomTom GO 2435TM is a classic device on the outside but a heavy hitter on the inside. There is a lot to play around with in this standard-sized GPS device and the lifetime features really contribute to the lifespan making this $300 GPS unit a worthy investment if you want snappy operation and advanced usability.
