TomTom GO 2535TM

2011 is a great year to be a new or average GPS user where all you expect is quick and simple navigation. Successful entry level and midrange devices always involve easy interfaces and the bigger the device, the better. The new TomTom VIA series provides a great answer that successfully blends value and functionality. The TomTom GO devices still secure their place as the power user choice and fortunately that lineup is being updated as well with the new TomTom GO 2535TM. Some of the new TomTom VIA improvements are recognized in these refreshed GO devices.

Design

One of the aspects that did not see any changes are the design and that isn't surprising because TomTom needs to retain their identity and having the classic black design certainly gets that job done. The large 5-inch display is enough for this TomTom GO device to attract its own crowd. Owners of high-end smartphones will immediately appreciate the way the glass touchscreen feels. It is also easy to mount the device to the windshield by attaching click & lock magnetic mount.

Interface

You can really notice a huge boost to the usability if you jump from the standard 4.3-inch display to the 5-inch display. The icons appear bigger and the user interface itself is simpler sharing similarities with TomTom's new VIA series. Touching the "Navigate to..." icon leads you to an easy wizard for planning a route while the "View map" icon brings you to the map where you can see your surroundings. The glass touchscreen gives you advanced support for gestures where you can swipe your fingers to transition to other screens. In the map view, you can do pinch-to-zoom gestures for easy zooming.

Navigation Features

Viewing the map is a pleasant experience even if you do not plan to make a route yet. You can see your current location in clear detail and you can change the view as you drive. Map coverage includes just about every spot in North America and you have 7 million points of interests to work with. These POIs are generously categorized in 60 sections so you won't be overwhelmed when planning your first route. The lifetime map updates ensure that the latest map updates head to your device without additional charges.

The GO 2535TM utilizes the IQ Routes technology to come up with a fast route where you are highly unlikely to meet any traffic along the way. It would correctly come up with a working route and then check the current time and day to see if there is traffic. It would then come up with another route if too much traffic is detected. Combined with the lifetime traffic updates, you get a consistently reliable device without worrying about hidden subscription costs.

Following the indicated route is easy because you have the vocals to guide you. It is not only timely when it comes to calling out turns, but it also says the street name for you thanks to text-to-speech so you are sure that the next turn is safe. Things can get a bit tricky when you approach multiple lane junctions and intersections that you are not very familiar with. The Advanced Lane Guidance simplifies things by leading you to the right lane using 3D graphics. This function is also useful in the highway where it prepares you to make an exit.

A nice extra feature lets you use the built-in microphone give voice commands for planning a route so you won't always need to reach and touch the screen while you drive. It is actually pretty smart since it can accept lengthy commands such as "Take me to 23 Main Street". That same microphone can be used to place phone calls after you paired your device with a phone through Bluetooth. Doing so turns your GO 2535TM into a hands-free accessory where you can hear the other person you are talking to out loud through the speakerphone.

The TomTom GO 2535TM has that premium $320 price tag but you get no comprises because the large screen is there along with the lifetime updates and slim design. The new interface makes this device more appealing to those that are ready to handle advanced features like voice recognition.
