TomTom ONE 140-S Review

Before GPS devices were mainstream, one had to pay a hefty amount just for a simple GPS device with basic features. With the introduction of the TomTom GO devices, travelers were ecstatic to see their favorite gadget companions more feature-rich than ever before, but the prices were still a bit high. With the release of the TomTom ONE 140-S, everyone can get their own automobile companion for a comfortable price that should fit any budget and the features don’t disappoint too.

Design

There is nothing really special with the design sporting the standard 3.5 inch QVGA touch screen. The slightly curved shape makes it pretty nice to show off with confidence.

Interface

It is fairly easy to navigate through the different options so first time GPS users should definitely be placed. The small screen size does introduce a few limitations including the slight difficulty in inputting text, but doesn’t really bring down the entire interface as whole. The TomTom 140S does work out of the box though making it refreshingly easy to get started after the online activation is finished.

Navigation

The navigation features is one of the main strengths here with the accuracy far more improved than the older models. Positioning on the map updates fairly quickly when things start to get into motion. It is by no means perfect compared to the higher end devices, but it is still fairly strong against other GPS devices in its price range.

There are two features that work together really well in improving the navigation experience which are the IQ Routes and Map Share features. Both of these features improve as more people use the advice and help contribute. Fastest routes are determined with better accuracy based on the historical data of others and points of interests are corrected. You can contribute to fixing locations and reporting distances travelled as well to improve the experience of others.

Advanced features include the advanced lane guidance which is basically more detailed representations of complex freeway interchanges. All the lane information is highlighted to allow better route planning and bigger risk reductions in making the wrong turn.

The “S” in the 140-S model includes Text-to-Speech capabilities which are one of the best safety features that many of the higher-end models have. This feature is improved in the 140S with support for additional accidents including Spanish and French and plenty of celebrity voices that can be downloaded from the TomTom site free.

Other Features

Fuel prices can be downloaded on demand which can be of great help to budget conscious drivers finding the best nearby gasoline station. With the RDS-TMS receiver you can track traffic incidents along the chosen route as well.

The TomTom ONE 140-S is a small and portable GPS device with plenty of power packed inside. It has a terrific interface that operates smoothly and should be pretty easy to pick up. This device is highly recommended for anyone willing to spend less than $200 for a GPS device.

Actual user reviews:

• "I upgraded from the TomTom One 130 to this TomTom One 140s for the advanced lane guidance and I absolutely love it. The spoken street names are nice but no big deal (You have to select a computer voice to get street names. The natural voice can only say pre-recorded things). The names are probably helpful for people who do not want to take their eyes of the road. However, those people will miss the absolute greatest feature which is the advanced lane guidance. It is so nice to get advanced notice that there are multiple lanes coming up and being told very clearly by means of the multiple arrows which lane(s) you can choose. I live in the Seattle area and found that it will show those arrows for nearly all large intersections that have multiple turning lanes. On the freeway you not only get the guidance arrows at the bottom, but frequently a big computer generated picture that clearly depicts all lanes and on/off ramps with big arrows inside the lanes you can choose." • "I have just replaced my TomTom One 130S with the 140S. The IQ Routes Technology dramatically improves the routing. I have owned Navman, Mio, and Garmin GPS units. This one has the best routing yet! This is an excellent value!" - C.D.Hess (NY,USA)
