TomTom VIA 1405TM

TomTom is well established as a GPS maker even though the competition is a bit tough these days. There will always be people buying TomTom products because the company successfully targeted all the major price ranges so demanding users can go for the TomTom GO products while the rest can go for the XL and XXL products if they want basic functionalities. But TomTom made a rather surprising announcement during the International Consumer Electronics Show back in January 2011. Rather than adding new models to existing families, TomTom made a new series called "VIA" which will serve as the mid-tier choice. It is expected that these devices will eventually replace the XL lineup since devices like the TomTom VIA 1405TM have similar features to their XL siblings along with some fresh enhancements.

Design

One of the most notable features of the new VIA devices is the design but if you still want to go for the classical look, the VIA 1405TM is a good choice as it uses the familiar black finish. It still has a slimmer design so upgrading from an older TomTom model is still worthwhile. You also get the handy EasyPort mount for quick mounting but the difference is that it is now integrated with the device for even easier installation. Like the older XL devices, the screen measures 4.3 inches diagonally.

Interface

TomTom refers to its interface as smarter and that is justifiable with its fresher and friendlier look. If you have used a Garmin device in the past, you will also feel at home as the home screen features two large icons that lead to the most commonly used functions which is viewing the map and planning a quick route.

Navigation Features

Being part of the budget spectrum, the VIA 1405TM does not really bring anything new to the table. But what is nice is that it has all the essentials for a decent price tag so you shouldn't really mind. TomTom users should feel even more at home when they notice the following familiar features.

TomTom's very own IQ Routes technology is featured once again by helping you plan the quickest route possible. The technology is aware of the different traffic conditions at different times of the day while taking the posted speed limit into consideration. Combined with the lifetime traffic updates, your trips should be smoother as long as you rely on the VIA 1405TM's findings. You can also stay focused on the road while the device says the directions out loud including the actual street names through text-to-speech.

There is also an Advanced Lane Guidance feature which shows off the nice graphical capabilities of the VIA 1405TM. It shows off nice 3-D perspective of the road whenever you are in a highway. If you have a route planned, the feature will let you know which lane to be on in order to take the indicated exit so you can stay on course. This is a very useful feature if you do not want to waste time especially if you encounter unfamiliar intersections or multi-lane junctions.

Like other TomTom devices, you will have access to over 7 million points of interests right out of the box and they are all neatly organized in categories like gas stations, places to eat, hotels, and other key locations and landmarks. Using the Help Me! function will also reveal locations of nearby police stations, fire stations, and hospitals for emergency access. These premium maps cover all of the US, Canada, and Mexico areas totaling over one million miles of road so you can use the same device when you go on a road trip in North America. The best thing about this is that you have free access to map updates for a lifetime so you won't have to buy a new GPS device for a very long time or pay to download more maps.

Conclusion

For a $200 device, the VIA 1405TM is surprisingly adequate and existing TomTom users should already know what it is capable of doing. This is a good device to get if you have an older TomTom unit that lacks the lifetime updates. The interface is nice and mounting the device to different vehicles is easier since the mount is built-in. Any new user should appreciate the device for its thin design and easy functions.
