TomTom VIA 1435TM

GPS is becoming a more familiar acronym to the average person because it is often featured in most modern smartphones these days and the price of ordinary GPS devices are starting to drop. At the same time, manufacturers like TomTom continue to improve every year with their devices not only becoming more responsive and accurate but also more affordable. The fact that these manufacturers still roll out dedicated GPS devices show that smartphones are not yet ready to be the best all-around GPS device. Devices like the TomTom VIA 1435TM are still needed because more of the features and technologies are very GPS-specific. It is designed to pair up with your smartphone as well.

Design

A GPS device that is accurate and has 4.3-inch touchscreen sounds familiar because TomTom has made many of these in the past. Their TomTom GO and XL series continue to the sell but the newer VIA 1435TM is an entirely different animal. It has a fresh new design with a brushed-aluminum finish and manages to be thinner than the non-VIA devices. The EasyPort mount for installing the device in the car is also built-in for easy transferring to other vehicles when necessary.

Interface

Along with the design, the interface gets an enhancement too and it is great news for new and old users alike. The main menu makes it easier to do common functions so you can plan a quick route or check out the surroundings in your current location just by touching a large icon. If you do not want to touch the device all the time to plan routes, you can also talk to the device and let its built-in voice recognition do the processing. It looks like TomTom wants to get serious with its competitor Garmin in terms of usability.

Navigation Features

The navigation features is what makes the VIA 1435TM feel like a classic device which is good because these technologies have proven to work even years before. A lot of people should be familiar with the IQ Routes technology that continues to make appearances for every TomTom car GPS device. You can plan routes without worrying about heavy traffic situations because the VIA 1435TM is aware of that no matter what time it is and the lifetime traffic updates further support the creation of the best possible route. Since it uses text-to-speech to read the street names out loud, you can stay focused on the road too.

But paying attention to the screen still helps especially when you move on to a highway because the Advanced Lane Guidance feature can change the map perspective into a 3D view where you can see signs and other useful information. The most important bit is the arrow indicator which shows which lane you have to be in so you can take the incoming exit which is part of your route. This also helps if you are heading towards an unfamiliar junction with multiple lanes or intersections.

The map features continue to impress each year and the VIA 1435TM is no exception with millions of miles of road coverage across North America and 7 million points of interests to make sure that you never get lost. It does not matter how long you own the device too because the lifetime map updates ensure that your GPS device is outfitted with the latest locations. This is good if you do not plan to buy a GPS device in the near future.

The TomTom VIA 1435TM has a few other tricks as well including the ability to link up with your smartphone using Bluetooth connectivity. Once a pairing is established, your GPS device will react if your phone has an incoming call. Since it has a built-in microphone, you can answer that call and engage in a hands free conversation while you drive safely and stay focused.

Conclusion

What is surprising with this new GPS model is that TomTom keeps the price reasonably low at $220. You get a screen that is sharp and bright, convenient built-in mounting design, and superb built quality. The free lifetime and map updates are a big plus.
