Design

This includes the sleek design of the device with the screen measuring 4.3 inches diagonally. It doesn't come out thin, but it does have some nice round accents and should still be able to slide inside a pocket. It is powered by the same display power which is necessary to enjoy the interface and the 3-D graphics.

Interface

Users of past TomTom devices should be very familiar with the device as it sports the same user interface. Those that are new to XL models will like the larger text and graphics display, while purely new users shouldn't have a difficult time learning the device because the setup process is so straightforward, requiring only a simple one-time activation process to be done. The icon-driven home screen is presented showing all of the most frequently performed tasks.

Navigation Features

Although the TomTom XL 340T is a considered a lower cost alternative to the GO models, the feature set remains impressive and the accuracy of the device is surprisingly decent. With the "T" series you get up-to-date traffic information. Users will enjoy the privilege of having Lifetime Traffic Updates which is excellent for people that are frequently on the go.

Traffic conditions are updated every 3 minutes. If ever a traffic jam interrupts the route, a better alternate route is calculated in real-time to make sure you do not get caught in a major traffic snarl. No subscriptions are necessary to use these features, giving it a significant competitive advantage over other models.

The TomTom XL 340T is further backed up with some other neat extras including the "Advanced Lane Guidance" feature which should benefit those that are frequently driving on highways. To avoid missing important turns on the route, the GPS device uses visual cues to make sure that the driver is on the correct lane. It uses 3-D graphics to present this to make it easy for drivers to comprehend.

Drivers that need to stay focused will appreciate the Text-to-Speech capabilities that are built into the device. Custom maps can be shared with other users to ensure that maps stay up-to-date. Downloading maps from other TomTom users can also be a great way to keep up with any new points of interest being added regardless of location.
